Whilst working on an Ash tree severely affected with Ash Dieback, we were bringing the trunk to a safe height next to a road, leaving some stem as a monolith for habitat.
After cutting through the final section of stem I discovered it was hollow and full of honeycomb! Oops. I evacuated the tree sharpish as the bees swarmed out.
We contacted a local beekeeper for advice, who lent me a suit and suggested I nail a roof onto the monolith to protect the hive from the elements.
I salvaged some honeycomb from the section I had cut off and squeezed out the honey - two small jars were extracted, one for the client and one for me!
